Sharks - #1 in the World!

While Timothy W was in Vegas, Sharon and I used his tickets to see the Sharks whip on the Vancouver Canucks 5-0. They were scoring so fast and furious that Sharon said she was getting tired from standing up and cheering so much!

And yes, the Sharks are rated number one in the world! Think that's just my opinion? No, check out the New York Times Slapshot Blog.

Funny Thursday Response

Tim must know me well. Caddyshack is one of my all time favorite movies. Any of the scenes with Bill Murray are great. I like the one Tim posted (8 out of 10). However, this one is my favorite. Plus it's giving me a quote I can use -- "So I've got that going for me, which is nice".

Impressive Reflexes

I saw the video of our soon to be ex-President dodging the shoes thrown at him and I thought, those are damn good reflexes for somebody a bit older. And he came up from his first duck with a smile, almost taunting-like (“bring ‘em on”) before the second shoe was hurled his way, which he dodged too. I rate that his best performance in eight years. He didn't have much time to wait for the second shoe to drop to be thrown.

James Fallows plagiarized my thoughts…that dog…if I ever meet him in person, you can be sure my shoes are coming off. Here's the link to his blog entry.

Inaugural Story Continues

Here's a link for you broadband people to the first TV news report on the band. Unfortunately, they kept saying the band was from Redwood City - it's actually Redwood Middle School from Saratoga!

http://www.ktvu.com/video/18273037/index.html

Look for the trombone player with the blue t-shirt -- that's Ben. There's both a frontal shot and a longer shot of him from behind.

Also, at the winter concert tonight, channel 5 was filming. I'll link to their video if they put it online.

BTW, I'm not worried about Ben and the cold. It's been close to freezing here for the past week and he's still wandering around in a t-shirt and shorts!

Ben's Thrilling Story

Saratoga's Redwood Middle School Marching Band will be in the Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 20, 2009. Even for a band accustomed to taking home first-place trophies, an invitation to this parade is a pretty big honor.

Read the rest of the story at: http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_11199016

Ben plays the trombone in the band, one of his many instruments (saxophone, guitar, and piano).

But here is the answer: a beautiful, intelligent, and exciting woman that happens to be my girlfriend.

Sarah Palin Letter

subtitle: Is it wrong?

Tonight I received a letter from Sarah Palin asking for my donation to help the Republican Party.

The return envelope doesn't require a stamp, though there is a statement on the envelope requesting you to use your own stamp to save the Republican Party money.

Is it wrong to write a big zero on the letter and to send it?

Needless to say, the envelope will be back in the mail tomorrow with a big zero.

Obama Appeal to Me

Just read this op-ed in the New York Times:

Thinking About Obama

Click the link for the full article. Here is a small excerpt from the article:

We’ve been watching Barack Obama for two years now, and in all that time there hasn’t been a moment in which he has publicly lost his self-control. This has been a period of tumult, combat, exhaustion and crisis. And yet there hasn’t been a moment when he has displayed rage, resentment, fear, anxiety, bitterness, tears, ecstasy, self-pity or impulsiveness.

The article explains the appeal that Obama has for me. His ability to handle things with a level of calmness and thoughtfulness. Something that I haven't experienced in the last 8 years of "W"

James Fallows

I read a number of political blogs on a daily basis. My favorite is from Jim Fallows. He is a long-time journalist. I originally read his articles in the Atlantic. Here's an excerpt from his blog post titled Our Capacity for Self-Government.

Grow up. If John McCain has a better set of plans to deal with the immediate crisis, and the medium-term real-economy fallout, and the real global problems of the era -- fine, let him win on those. But it is beneath the dignity he had as a Naval officer to wallow in this mindless BS. I will say nothing about the dignity of a candidate who repeatedly winks at the public, Hooters-waitress style. A great country acts great when it matters. This is a time when it matters -- for politicians in the points they raise, for journalists in the subjects they write about and the questions they ask of candidates. And, yes, for voters.

Agreed...hard to take

I watched about 30 minutes of the VP debate last night until I also couldn't take it anymore. Too many "doggone it"s and "gosh darn it"s for me.Even so, I've read a number of articles today that she did well, like this one in the New York Times - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/03/opinion/03brooks.html?partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

Of course she did relatively well in a debate format where she could just spout the talking points rammed into her head, often when they had nothing to do with the question. In fact, at one point, she said she didn't have to answer the moderator's question, she was talking to the "American People". Not once did she state any specifics while I was watching. Here's how well she does when Katie Couric asks for specifics. There's no reason to believe that she's any better prepared in the two weeks of cramming for the debate.

But in the end, I don't think the debate really mattered. Those people who were going to vote for her are still going to vote for her. Those who weren't, still won't. And I can't imagine that those who are undecided heard anything to get them to vote for McCain/Palin.
Here are two thoughts that were reinforced while watching her:
  • By nominating her, McCain is a cynical bastard who doesn't give a damn about the good of the country
  • If she ever was to become president, heaven help us (U.S. and the world).

But on a hopeful item, Obama continues to widen the lead in polls. In fact, the McCain campaign is pulling out of Michigan.

Really???

I couldn't stomach the VP Debate last night due to Palin. Instead I watched the San Jose Earthquakes, much better even though the game ended on a tie with a semi-questionable penalty kick in the last minute of the game.

Ride of Seven Differences!!

No action or people pictures... but the biker community should be on alert!! The Seven Differences have ridden! Roughly 100 miles to Watsonville and back over Mt. Madonna.

Seven Differences consists of Angela, Tracy, and I (Tim). Just a few of the differences: two women / one man, two Suzuki Savages / one Honda Shadow, and two first letter of name is T / one not...

Longest Ride Yet

Due to ice skating being canceled, Angela and I decided to go on a motorcycle ride together. The ride had a few firsts:

- Filling the bike with fuel
- Cruising at 40 mph
- Top speed of 50 mph to 60 mph (didn't catch the exact number)

Riding the bike was a blast. Smiles all around!

East Coast Vacation

We recently went on an East Coast vacation to Washington DC, Gettysburg, and New York City. We had a great time at all three destinations. We were definitely in tourist mode, visiting multiple tourist sites every day.

We went on a Capitol tour given by our congresswoman's office.

One of many cannons at Gettysburg. Sharon and Dale have a mean look because the cannon is a weapon of war. Don't they look tough!

Here we are on Ellis Island. I'm guessing you can tell what's in the background!

Motorcycle Gear

I have my full set of motorcycle gear. All that is left is license (taking written test on Thursday) and an actual motorcycle.

I have a modular helmet from KBC. A jacket from Frank Thomas. The helmet is black, the jacket is black and white. Decided to go with the white jacket for added visibility as well as it looked cool.

Here is what is required to pass the MSF skills test:

ok... that was a joke. The test did consist of: u-turns (figure eight within a small area), swerve, quick stop, and cornering on a 135 degree turn.

Competition

It's hard to compete with a teenage son. Here are the areas he's better than me:
  1. Tennis
  2. Chemistry
  3. Foosball

Here are the areas where we're roughly equal:

  1. Air hockey

Here are the areas that I'm better:

  1. U.S. History
  2. Lasagna cooking

AND

3. Whack-a-Mole - Look at his utter disbelief as the whacker just rockets from mole to mole. It wasn't close - 46 moles whacked to 38 moles whacked

My favorite TV show's new season is about to start!!

Bionicle Battle May 2008

A film by Scott Cohen, son of Danielle (of blog commenter fame)

btw: Dani (as her close friends call her) did also give me a "left handed alert", the last two singers on American Idol were both left handed (David Archuleta and David Cook)

That reminded me of a person in Steve's high school class (I believe), whose name was David David (or David Squared)

Oh yeah... Happy Birthday Dani!!!

I hope you don't mind that I "scrunched" what could have been 3 "Dani" based entries into one. :) For the permanent record, it has been recorded as 3.

Inspiring Sports News

No, I don't mean the Sharks win in game 4. More often than not, player news is usually about some arrest, affair, or suspension. But this past Saturday, Western Oregon was playing Central Washington in softball. A part-time 5 foot 2 player hit her first home run in her four year college career. She missed first base on her home run trot. Unfortunately, when she doubled back to touch the bag, she injured her knee and couldn't walk. What happened next is the inspiring part!

Sharks and Beer

Yes, those San Jose Sharks pulled out the series win with a magnificent win! Tim and I will be going to the second game of the series against Dallas on Sunday.

But here's a question for all you faithful blog readers. I consider myself a person grounded in the scientific world. However I find that I'm superstitious at the oddest times.

Here's what I've noticed. If I drink a beer (Bud Light for those of you scoring at home), the Sharks lose, often in an ugly manner. Game 3, Sharks up by 3 goals only to see Calgary storm back with four goals and win -- I was caught imbiding a light beverage of hops and barley. Games 4 and 5 - no alcohol, Sharks win. Game 6, lamest Sharks game of the series, another empty bottle of brew. Game 7, strongest game of the series (perhaps the season) and I was sipping on sparkling mineral water.

Certainly the scientific part of me knows that what I drink does not affect Nabby's reflexes in goal or Cheechoo's move to the net but another part of me feels my choice of beverage gave Roenick the lift he needed last night. I'm very nervous about opening up another Bud Light while the Sharks are still competing for Lord Stanley's Cup.

Are you caught in this same conflict of logic and superstition? What superstitions do you have? And be sure to join me in a Diet Coke this Friday for game 1!

WTF?!?

Would you get on this train or wait for next? Even if the next train is 3 hours from now? I don't think I would ever be in such a hurry...

I don't understand, can anybody explain this behavior to me?

Here is the description of the video: Oshiya, or "pusher", is an informal Japanese term for a worker who stands on the platform of a railway station during the morning and evening rush hours, and pushes people onto the train. This video is a good example of just how crowded it gets on Japanese trains.

Balding Dude and Ice Skating Lessons

I finished my 2nd week of ice skating lessons on Tuesday. Another 10 weeks to go.

Ice skating is tough. The class is being taught at the Sharks Ice facilities in San Jose.

I am slowly getting more confident on the skates. Class is 30 minutes long with an adult open skate immediately after for an hour.

So far I have had two instructors. Both are fun for different reasons. One is very good at teaching, the other instructor and I enjoy being smartass/mouthy with each other.

Taking the class with Angela, as well as even starting to think about getting my own blades.

Good article about the facilities: Sharks Ice arena: Rinky-dink it's not

Mystery Solved!

I know you've been wondering ever since you saw that windiest road video, "what the heck were those Everett boys doing up in San Francisco anyways". Here's one of the things we were doing. We took a Segway tour by the San Francisco waterfront. It was about three hours, including training. We all had a great time. Everett boy Ben said it was "awesome" however he did wish the guy in front of him wasn't so slow, forcing Ben to go at a speed less than the maximum. Everett boy Tim also wished the guy in front of him (aka Everett boy Steve) was going faster but he took matters into his own hands and passed him. Here's a picture of us with Alcatraz in the background.

Almost Accomplished

I came very close tonight (Monday, Mar 31, 2008) to accomplishing a bowling goal of mine. The goal: a 600 series.

Tonight I bowled: 170, 187, and 233 for a 590 series.

I believe 233 is a new lifetime high game for me. Also the 233 game included my first gutter ball of the bowling league on the first ball of a frame. Fortunately the previous frame was a strike and I followed up the gutter ball with spare.

News that made me smile

Reading too many stories about global warming, Iraq war, the economy? Here's a news story that made me smile.

Police: Teen makes mistake of trying to rob former U.S. Marine
Bay City News Service
Article Launched: 03/27/2008 10:39:20 AM PDT

SANTA ROSA - A boy in his mid-teens learned Wednesday afternoon that it is not a good idea to try to rob a former U.S. Marine at knifepoint, even if the former Marine is 84 years old, police said today.
Santa Rosa police Sgt. Steve Bair said that's what happened around 2 p.m. in the 1600 block of Fourth Street. The elderly man was walking with a grocery bag in each arm when the boy approached him with a large knife, Bair said.

The boy said, "Old man, give me your wallet or I'll cut you," Bair said. The man told the boy he was a former Marine who fought in three wars and had been threatened with knives and bayonets, Bair said.

The man then put his bags on the ground and told the boy that if he stepped closer he would be sorry. When the boy stepped closer, the man kicked him in the groin, knocking him to the sidewalk, Bair said. The ex-Marine picked up his grocery bags and walked home, leaving the boy doubled over, Bair said.

The man reported the attempted robbery to police 45 minutes later.

Bair said the teen is described only as 15 or 16 years old. Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department.

How will Tim rate it?

Blog posts have been too few and far between lately. So it's time to start a new game. It's called "How will Tim rate it?". Periodically, I will post something interesting from the World Wide Web (aka The Internet). Tim will give it a rating 0-10, with 10 being the highest, along with his reasoning behind the ratings. Only then, after Tim has given his rating, will the faithful readers of this blog be free to post a comment with their rating and reasoning.

Let's start the game with a video from the my YouTube favorites list.

Roger and Me

I was so outraged by the Roger Clemens hearing with the House Oversight Committee, that I had to write an email to Henry Waxman, the chairman of the committee, and cc'ed my congresswoman, Anna Eshoo. Here were my thoughts:

This country has an incredible number of challenges to overcome. The Oversight Committee has a large role in helping to address these challenges. Is grilling Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee on steriod usage truly a high priority issue - where your committee should be spending its time and taxpayers' money? I could not believe my ears when Roger Clemens' butt is being discussed by your committee when literally billions of dollars have been lost in Iraq due to fraud and incompetence. Please stop the grandstanding and the wasting of the taxpayer money and get back to the crucial issues facing this country. I'm a lifelong Democrat. If I had a chance to vote in your election, I would never vote for you again. I hope the Democrats in the 30th District have the same resolve.

Recent Sunday Night Event

Last weekend I saw Blue Man Group with Steve, Ben, Dale, and Angela. Very good show!

New SUV

With our minivan's check engine light on and an estimated $3000 to possibly turn it off, we decided to get a new vehicle. We were thinking of getting some sort of hybrid vehicle but ultimately decided on a 2007 Honda CRV for it's versatility and safety ratings. It's all-wheel drive, so we can take it up to the Sierra for our occasional ski trips. Sharon is very happy with it. Reasons: (1) Looks nice inside and out, (2) Drives well, very smooth, (3) Simple, no-nonsense dashboard controls, (4) It's shorter than our minivan, so it fits better in the garage.
