    Call me "Handyman Tim"

With a little help from the internet, I have repaired my treadmill. Amazing!!

The tread roller at the backend of the machine, had a screw pull thru the plastic cover. Therefore the roller was not attached to the machine anymore... a big problem. I attempted a couple of "in house" fixes but the plastic cover just wasn't going to work.

Jumped on the internet, within 10 minutes had the replacement part order. Delivery took place late last week and the reconstruction of the machine was accomplished successfully last night.

    Wow, is it dark outside

Today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year.

I was just sitting at work and felt it was late. Later than normal for me to be at work. I then saw that it was only 5 pm and got back to work.

An hour later, I realize that today is the shortest day. I guess I noticed that fact without actually realizing it...

    Quick Update on Backyard work

Arriving home from my week in Stamford CT late last night, I was curious if my backyard was done.

The backyard gate and lighting on the redwood screens are done. The lights look great, nice effect. Will look even better once the vines are in place and growing up the screens.

The last piece that is needed to be finished is the fountain. It is still sitting in my garage.

    These Are Days

Has to be one of my top 10 songs.

These Are Days by 10,000 Maniacs

    These are
    These are days you'll remember
Never before and never since, I promise
Will the whole world be warm as this
    And as you feel it,
    You'll know it's true
That you you are blessed and lucky
    It's true that you
    Are touched by something
That will grow and bloom in you

    These are days you'll remember
When May is rushing over you
With desire to be part of the miracles
    You see in every hour
    You'll know it's true
That you are blessed and lucky
It's true that you are touched
By something that will grow and bloom in you

    These are days
These are the days you might fill
    With laughter until you break
    These days you might feel
    A shaft of light
Make its way across your face
    And when you do
You'll know how it was meant to be
See the signs and know their meaning
You'll know how it was meant to be
Hear the signs and know they're speaking
    To you, to you

    Makes Me Happy

Sliding 5 feet in my socks on the hardwood floors.

    My Company's New Place

Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Hyperion moved its headquarters. I am on the fourth floor of the building on the left. The complex used to be the HQ for 3Com before they pulled up and moved to the East coast.

The thing I like the most is the stairs. Going up and down four flights of stairs on a daily basis at least a few times will help with my overall general fitness.

My commute time is maybe about 3 minutes faster. The prior building is maybe 1.5 miles from the new place.

btw: I don't plan to take advantage of the $5000 program to purchase an energy efficent car.

    New Car for Tim?

Here is a new program at Tim's company, Hyperion Solutions...

Hyperion Solutions Corp. is offering its employees $5,000 toward the purchase of fuel-efficient cars, the business-performance-management software vendor said Monday.
Under its "Drive clean to drive change" program, Hyperion will reimburse employees $5,000 when they purchase a vehicle that gets 45 miles per gallon of gasoline or better. That standard is achievable by fuel-efficient cars that use hybrid, diesel, and electric motors, the company says.

Hyperion aims to provide the $5,000 reimbursement to as many as 200 employees per year. Employees who have been with Hyperion for one year or longer are eligible on a first-come, first-served basis. Employees can get the reimbursement for one fuel-efficient vehicle every four years.

Switching from a car that gets 20 mpg to one that gets 45 mpg can reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by as much as three tons per person per year, Hyperion says. Many scientists suspect that rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is a primary cause of global warming.

Based in Santa Clara, Calif.--the heart of Silicon Valley, which is notorious for its crowded highways--Hyperion employs approximately 2,500 people in 20 countries

    Backyard Project Update

Quick update on the backyard project.

I am guessing it is 1 to 2 days of work still left.

Grass, lighting, fountain installation, and gate are all that is left. The landscape dudes will be at my place on Friday to try to finish all of these items.

The backyard is looking great. I can already tell and feel that it will be comfortable and peaceful place to hang out.

If all goes well, I might have the final pictures on the site on Saturday.

    Song Lyrics

Heard this song this morning while in the shower. The song resonated with me on at least three different levels and possibly even more...

I Will Walk With You - Bruce Hornsby

A strong man feels weak in the still heat of the day
Nothing is black and white, just a hazy gray
There's a long lonesome sound in the distance calling back to me
You look for some small reward
    Everybody wants a little more
You could be the one at my door
    Someone I might've seen before
    What I come here for

    Everything comes and goes
You try to believe but you never know
    Anyway the wind blows
    Somewhere, sometime
    I will walk with you

Long way to go, the road winds on and on
You feel all alone, in the cold light of the dawn
And I know that it's warm by your side, but you're so far away
    There's always another wall
    Sometimes you feel so small
You could pick me up when I fall
Be the one to help me through it all
    Be there when I call

    Everything comes and goes
You try to believe but you never know
    Anyway the wind blows
    Somewhere, sometime
    I will walk with you

    There's always another wall
    Sometimes you feel so small
You could pick me up when I fall
Be the one to help me through it all
    Be there when I call

    Everything comes and goes
You try to believe but you never know
    Anyway the wind blows
    Somewhere, sometime
    I will walk with you

Hornsby at Palace of Fine Arts

I went to see Bruce Hornsby last night with Angela at the Palace of Fine Arts.

The show was great. Due to the "miracle" of the internet and Bruce's policy on audience taping, I was able to download the entire show this morning.

Below is the lyrics and mp3 file to probably my favorite song played last night. They incorporated Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb flawlessly during the song.

    Fortunate Son - Bruce Hornsby

I'm sitting wondering, watching the parade
    In my ever-present chair
People laughing and smiles all around me
Balloons and paper in my hair
There's a man in a car with the top down
    Waving wildly at me
"The poor son of a gun", I know he's thinking
    Better him, him than me

I've stared down the devil, and had to look away
Called out to the angels, but no-one ever came
Laid down odd and even, but double zero played
    That's alright, I'm a lucky one
    Such a fortunate son

I was always taught well, taught well
To be the strong one and keep it inside
But sometimes I sit beside the freeway
And howl out at the dark, dark sky
I might just have to go out and burn one
Have a drink or a few
Fade away in a cloudy haze of smoke
And give the old man's best salute

I've stared down the devil, and had to look away
Called out to the angels, but no-one ever came
Laid down odd and even, but double zero played
    That's alright, I'm a lucky one
    Such a fortunate son

    FortunateSon-Numb.mp3 (17MB in size).

A page on the site http://www.bruuuce.com has lyric analysis of the song.

    Hockey Lockout Stat Revisited

258 NHL players are playing in Europe out of 750 total players.

Percentage of NHL Players playing: 34%

Steve and I attended the Cleveland Barons vs. Edmonton Roadrunners hockey game last night in San Jose.

It was free since we are 10 pack ticket holders. Nothing to really write about other than I do miss watching NHL hockey. The American Hockey League just isn't the same.

The highlight of the night was hearing O Canada, the national anthem of Canada. The Canadian anthem was sung due to the fact that Edmonton is in Canada (for those that might be geographically challenged).

    Bird/Backyard Cam Offline

For those that are visiting the site to view either the Bird Cam or Backyard Cam... neither is up at the moment.

I tried to rearrange the cam to get a better view of the backyard and wasn't successful before I had to head to work. Will get the Cam situated correctly this weekend.

For the record: have already received an instant messenger disappointed that the Cam wasn't on the backyard.

    Great Web Site

I stumbled upon a great web site, fark.com. It's a site that mostly links to odd and amusing stories. I checked it daily.

My favorite feature is when they post a normal (relatively) photo and invite people to "enhance" it with Photoshop. This thread had me laughing so hard that tears started coming out of my eyes. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time! The original photo is at the top of the thread.

    Purpose

Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.
All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.
It will not matter what you owned nor what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.
So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will expire.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived at the end.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Even your gender and skin color will be irrevelant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?
What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success, but your significance.
What will mattter is not what you learned, but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered, or encouraged others to emulte your example.
What will matter is not your competence, but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.
What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident. It is not a matter of circumstance, but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I received this from a friend and it is always great to be reminded. I have a rock that was given to me by another friend that sits on my keyboard at work the reads simply 'purpose".

Reminding me to be concious and awake in the decisions and actions that I take every day.

    Julie in Africa

Here is a short email from her describing what she is doing:

There is a clinic and hospital that IU school of medicine have been helping for the last 10-15 years. IU asked if we would be interested in providing support for the pharmacy. Students from Purdue will also be here for 2 months at a time. They will be mostly in the hospital helping to take care of patients there. I am spending most of my time helping the clinic pharmacist make reports to prove to our drug suppliers that they are going to need to be providing a lot of drug soon. The HIV program actually consist of 8 different sites. Some near Eldoret and some quite far. The program is the biggest of its kind in Africa.

It has been good so far although I am busy all the time. Seems from the time I get up till bed I am on the go. Makes for the time to go by quickly.

We need to decide where we will be going this weekend. I am kind of voting for somewhere near.

    Love, Julie

    Evergreen Times

The Evergreen Area of San Jose has its own little community paper called the Evergreen Times. I enjoy reading the paper when it appears on my doorstep. They recently created/expanded their exposure via the internet.

As always my favorite part of any paper is the "police blotter".

    This month's favorite report:

    9/2
    Mountain Lion Sighting

    Terra Nova Lane
Several citizens reported seeing a mountain lion in the back yard of a residence. Officers searched the area, but the lion was not located. Animal Control, Fish and Game were notified.

According to Yahoo Maps, Terra Nova Lane is 2.8 miles from my house. Terra Nova Lane is very close to where I watched Dale play soccer in my area.

    DeAnza Titans

The soccer team that Dale is on, the DeAnza Titans, has been doing quite well. Last weekend, they made the semi-finals at a tournament in Sacramento.

They are ranked fourth in northern California by the gotsoccer.com website. Here is the ranking page. Teams get points according to how well they do in tournaments and how prestegious the tournament is. They got a lot of points when they made the semi-finals in State Cup earlier this year. The Sacramento tournament is the River City Labor Day Champions Cup.

It's league play time now, so there won't be any tournaments for a while. I think the next one is in October sometime.

You can follow the Titan's league results by going to the league's web site. Click on the "Teams/Scores" link on the left of the page. This Thursday morning at 3:30 a.m, most of us were woken up by an earthquake. I hadn't felt one in quite a while. Dale woke up and said "WHOA"! Luckily it was a small one, so nothing was damaged, just a few cupboard doors opening up and a few toys falling off an overly cluttered dresser.

Here is the USGS earthquake report. As you can see, it was only a mile from Saratoga.

At least we don't have hurricane after hurricane coming after us...

    Interesting Story about Arbor Software

I joined Arbor Software on March 18th, 1993. It was a very interesting and exciting place to work. The dynamics between individuals could probably be a good case study in a college class. Very strong personalities in the Engineering department of only about 14 individuals. Lots of conflict, not sure everybody liked each other, lots of fun playing foosball to unwind. The thing that did keep everybody focused was the product and the desire to go public (IPO).

The company eventually merged with Hyperion Software to create Hyperion Solutions. I will be celebrating my 12th year anniversery this March. I believe the company has about 2500 employees. Quite a bit more than when I joined.

Below is a snippet out of an article that describes a decision that was vital to the success of Arbor Software.

btw: Kirk Cruikshank is a graduate of University of Michigan.

The below was written May 06, 1999.

    Inventing credibility

The Reflection story underscores an important lesson: Successful PR strategies build credibility at the same time they're building a buzz. For an example, we turn to Arbor Software Corp., a company that went public in November 1995 and racked up the fifth best performance for an IPO in Wall Street history. But just two years earlier, Arbor's future had been, at best, murky.

In that year, 1993, Kirk Cruikshank joined Arbor Software (now part of Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Hyperion Solutions Corp.) as senior vice president of marketing. The startup had 32 people and a promising software application, still in beta, that enabled relational database users to slice and dice data into useful information. "The market segment and space [were] not there. We had to build the market," says Cruikshank, now president and CEO of TradingDynamics Inc., a Palo Alto-based startup that develops trading systems and applications for online business-to-business auctions.

Like most startups, Arbor didn't have the money to bankroll a mammoth advertising campaign, so Cruikshank targeted "free" media as he set out to invent a product category. "PR has phenomenal reach if you're good at controlling the message," he advises. Although Arbor hired a PR agency, because of the product's complexity Cruikshank wanted to shape the initial campaign message in-house. But he relied on the agency to supply crucial feedback and to orchestrate a full-blown media onslaught--including a press tour and speaking engagements.

Arbor claimed that its enterprise software made it much easier for office workers and executives to examine huge corporate repositories of data using ordinary computer spreadsheets. Cruikshank's plan: get a prestigious endorsement from an industry guru to bolster these claims.

Who better than Dr. Edgar F. Codd, the father of the relational database? When Cruikshank suggested hiring Codd's San Jose-based consulting firm, Codd and Date Inc., to write a white paper, his colleagues were skeptical. "They expected that he'd say, 'This stuff stinks,'" admits Cruikshank. "But he was a good scientist, open to ideas." The resulting white paper not only endorsed Arbor's software but coined the term on-line analytic processing, or OLAP.

Overnight, Arbor found itself with a highly promotable new product category. Although some competitors and critics discounted the white paper as nothing more than a paid endorsement, Arbor believed it now possessed powerful competitive ammunition. Then Arbor's PR agency, The Horn Group Inc. of San Francisco, noticed that Computerworld's editorial calendar featured an upcoming article on innovations in business analysis software. They pitched the white paper's conclusions to the respected trade publication, and the editors took the bait--an exclusive featuring Codd and his associates' unexpected conclusions.

The resulting story kicked up a storm of controversy. (And the editor in chief of Computerworld printed a retraction a few months after the original story, stating that the staff did not know that the Codd and Date white paper was commissioned by Arbor.) "It had an explosive impact on the industry," recalls Cruikshank. "Controversy is fabulous, as long as it's the right kind." By polarizing the market into camps, Arbor hoped to emerge as the new thought leader.

But the job wasn't over. Cruikshank recalls the advice of spin doctor Sabrina Horn, founder and president of The Horn Group: "[She] said, 'We [have] to evangelize this [the white paper].' So we ran East and West Coast dinners for analysts and all the major trades." For a startup, those image-bolstering meals weren't cheap--about $75 to $100 a head with good wine, appetizers and dinner. In the smoke-and-mirrors game of startup PR, Arbor was following one of the basic commandments: Start acting like a big company (even though you're not).

Arbor knew it was finally playing in the big leagues when competitors started joining the startup's OLAP Council. Gradually, OLAP became a new industry standard. Three years after going public, Arbor Software had 450 employees and fiscal 1998 revenue topping $82 million. It subsequently merged with Hyperion Software in August 1998 in a deal worth almost $800 million.

I think the first album I ever bought was from the Beach Boys. However, Counting Crows is a new addition to the top 10 list. And I'm working on others. I recently purchased music from The Wallflowers, Matchbox Twenty, and Dave Matthews Band.

    Blue Angels in Salinas

The Blue Angels are making an appearance at the Salinas Airshow the weekend of Oct 2.

I have gone to the Salinas air show for the last 3 years now. Amazing airshow and the Blue Angels are simply amazing.

Here is a Van Halen video that I love. Not sure when it was made (guessing the mid 80's while I was college). The video is "Dream", and it stars the Blue Angels.

May those that love us, love us.
And those that don't love us,

    My Pad from Space

Did you know that you might be able to find an image of your house from space?

    Terraserver: http://terraserver.microsoft.com/default.aspx

    Here is my house

Below is a slightly correct view, the little push pin isn't correct on the site. My house is the one circled with the bluish color. You can click on the image to see a bigger view of it.

UPDATE: I knew there was another site that does something similiar: GlobeXplorer - http://www.globexplorer.com

Another picture of my house (first house on the bottom from the left (next to the park). You can see my old Mustang in the driveway. This picture was taken 6/22/00. At this point, the Mustang had been parked and not moved for ~ 2 years. Very glad that I finally got rid of it this year.

In this picture, you can see the condos where the vineyards were located. The watermarks are annoying...

I had meet a friend of a friend that worked for GlobeXplorer at a little party (I think during the Christmas time frame last year). Small world...

What is going on with Tim?

Been very quiet on the ol' Everett Family Blog...

I have gotten into a comfortable rhythm (funny looking word) recently.

    The life cycle of Tim:

    • Walk / Run a mile at least 3 times a week at 6 am

    • Work a typically 8 to 9 hour day

    • Been cooking dinner at home at least 3 times a week (chicken breast on the George Foreman Grill)

    • Visit Gold's Gym for at least 45 min at least 3 times a week, usually around 9 pm.

    • Nights that I don't go to the gym, at least 60 ab crunches and at least 45 pushups.

    • Volunteering on Thursday nights for two hours with Innvision helping kids with homework and other learning activities during the summer.

Outside of the normal "life cycle", I have been downloading a lot of great live concerts via bittorrent. Requires a bit of busy work to get the music converted into a format that my ipod will play, but well worth it.

Good sites for live concert music:

Last night I made modifications to the blog that will hopefully not allow spam comments to be posted.

I don't know if anybody has been seeing the spam comments, I have been trying to remove them as fast as they appear. The changes will reject the comments prior to them appearing on the site.

Drop me an email if for some reason, your comment gets rejected (it shouldn't)

    Let your soul shine
    It's better than sunshine
    It's better than moonshne
    Damn sure better than rain
    Lord now people don't mind
We all get this way sometimes
Got to let your soul shine
Shine till the break of day

    Gratitude (Quote of the Day)

For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
    For everything Thy goodness sends.
    ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sun is shinin' in the sky,
There ain't a cloud in sight
    It's stopped rainin'
    Everybody's in a play
    And don't you know
    It's a beautiful new day.

    Birthday!!

    Happy Birthday Steve!!

Anybody have any humorous / funny stories that they would care to share on Steve's birthday?

    Chapel of Love

Tristan, my cousin, is getting married on October 9th on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan. Should be a great time!!

Not that I need anything else to remind me of my age, but Tristan was the first person that I was a paid baby sitter for. Spending time with her and Meg, allowed me to purchase a 10 speed bike.

    Sam's Birthday

Samantha was born today. Birthdays were always very important to her. I am very glad that she was able to spend her birthday last year at Disney Land.

I wish that I could have been there with her.

A video of Train's song When I Look To The Sky says a lot about my life with her and my feelings.

    Cholesterol Update

Just got the results of my 3 month followup cholesterol checkup:

Modifiying my diet and exercising at least 3 times a week has allowed me to lose 10 lbs in the 3 months.

    Initial cholesterol results:
    Total cholesterol: 259
    LDL (bad cholesterol): 150
    HDL (good cholesterol): 36

    Current cholesterol results:
    Total cholesterol: 148
    LDL (bad cholesterol): 87
    HDL (good cholesterol): 40

LDL should be below 100 and HDL should be above 40. Things are going great on the cholesterol front. Will need to have it checked again in 3 months.

    15 years in November

This November, it will be 15 years since I graduated from Michigan Tech in Houghton Michgan.

Hard to believe it has been that long...

Here is a slide show timelapse of the Portage Lift Bridge in Houghton over a period of one year. It gives a good perspective on the beauty (and snow of the area).

I recommend setting the delay to 1 sec.

    Interesting Stats

I have recently cleared out the log files that my web server generates as of June 28th. Therefore all of the data that is being tracked is roughly two weeks old.

The most interesting information is Search Engine Phrases that are used to find the site. So far all of the referrals via a search engine are from Yahoo.

The Everett Family Blog has been reached via Yahoo referrals twelve times.

The breakdown of search phrases (not the exact phrasing, but just a generalization):

    4 - Batman Deadend
4 - United States Thunderbird ejection pictures
3 - Cemac Bank (scam emails that I posted about)

and the most interesting and funny search phrase (and the exact phrase used):

"louis vuitton bag from last episode of friends"

    I Have Golf Clubs

I have finally made the move and purchased a set of golf clubs.

    Back Home Again

Last Wednesday, I had to fly to Stamford CT for work. I got home last night around 9:30 pm.

This was the first trip that I flew into John F. Kennedy International Airport . Stamford is roughly 40 miles from the airport so it isn't too bad of a drive.

I am always impressed by the sheer size of the Empire State Building. Not just how tall it is, but also how massive it is. It does truly stand out in the NYC skyline. I can only imagine what the World Trade Center Towers would have looked like.

The drive to Stamford also took me by the location of the New York 1964 World's Fair. The location at the end of Men in Black movie. The Unisphere and the New York State Pavilion were easily viewable from the highway.

Driving by the location was also interesting because on this trip I read the book "Devil in the White City". An interesting book on the events of the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.

I wished I would have read the book prior to my last visit to Chicago. The Hyperion User Conference party was held at the Museum of Science and Industry. A building from the fair that was essentially rebuilt to be a permanent structure. I would have liked to have seen the lagoons and the wooded island that Frederick Olmstead fought for.

Small California sidebar: Frederick Olmstead also designed Stanford University.

Great Song (and most recent album purchase)

The reason I purchased the album was for the song "Fields of Gray"

When the night lies so still
    Before I go to sleep
I come by, I come by
    Just to look at you
In the dim light I say
That in my own small way
I will try, I will try
    To help you through

    There'll be blue skies falling
There'll be sad scenes and bad dreams
    In a world so uncertain
Through the clouds it's hard to see
I will grab you and lift you
As you hold on tight and sway
    We'll go walking
    Across the fields of gray

    There's a place I can go
When the world gets me down
    When nothing, when nothing
    Goes quite right it seems
As I look there I know
    Fortune smiles on me so
But who knows, no one knows
    About tomorrow

    There'll be blue skies falling
There'll be sad scenes and bad dreams
    In a world so uncertain
Through the clouds it's hard to see
I will grab you and lift you
As you hold on tight and sway
    We'll go walking
    Across the fields of gray

When I was younger I saw things in black and white
Now all I see is a sad, hazy gray
Sometimes I see a narrow flash of light
Sometimes I look and you show me the way

    No matter what else happens
    What the future will be
    In a world so uncertain
Through the clouds it's hard to see
I will grab you and carry you
Calm your fears if you're afraid
    We'll go walking
    Across the fields of gray

A version of the song, Fields of Gray from a live concert of Bruce Hornsby.

Movie Review (Fahrenheit 9/11) via Sandy

Received via an email from Sandy

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi...I've been discussing Dem. politics, Kerry and Moore's movie with several of you the past few weeks. If you might be interested in another take on it. I think both Republicans and Democrats should see it. Both sides may be surprised. I know I was. He took on the Dems. in many scenes, also. See it and make up your own mind--not what rumor, your church or your friendly politician might say.

Moore supported Nadar four years ago with money and his "celebrity" status, not Gore, not the Dems.

He clearly states on all news shows that he doesn't like Bush. BUT, in this movie he gives reasons why--all reasons substantiated from Bush's own speeches, his top advisor's speeches, the network news, both Fox and CNN, and published books and the nation's top newspapers. Even newspaper columnists who don't like him or the movie, have carried positive comments in their columns on the movie. He carries the actual broadcasts, with permission of all the networks.

Despite what you may have heard, Moore takes potshots to the Democrats too in several scenes.

He hires three independent, nonpartisan fact checkers and an attorney before he puts his movies out. One of the news shows carried this information. Data from aired tv news programs have cited attribution of his facts from normal journalist national newspapers of award winning, high quality standards. New York Times, Washington Post, etc. and from books and authors who have covered the events.

He takes time to let many people speak for themselves, both for Bush and against. It is funny at times, poignant at times, sad at times. I hope you will see it.

Everett Family Blog is back online

If you happen to host a web site on your machine, please be aware that upgrading to ZoneAlarm 5 can be troubling.

Zonealarm is a firewall that helps to protect a computer from the evil that exists on the Internet. I have been using it for at least 4 years with no issues.

Seems like the most recent update just wasn't quite ready for primetime. I have been involved in software releases that had similiar problems, that is never fun.

All traffic passes thru Zonealarm between my machine and the Internet. The bug (defect) is that Zonealarm was corrupting the information being sent from my web server to the Internet. Causing all sorts of weird things to happen.

Pretty frustrating at times over the weekend but very relieved to have finally solved it.

Example of things that I have completely forgotten

I used to be smart... Uses of trigonometry via Wikipedia has demonstrated just how much I have forgotten.

I have used things such as Fourier series and Fourier transform 16 years ago in college. Could I reacquint myself with the ideas? Maybe, but I am not confident.

Check out this page on Fourier transform. Now when I see things like this I think "huh?". The Tim of 1988 was a completely different person.

Lately I have needed to use the calculator in Windows to simply add numbers together.

    Next Project

The next project that I am going to fund is my backyard. Approaching 9 years of being in the house, it is probably time to get the backyard put in.

I use the word "fund" because I am very fortunate and grateful to be able to pay for the work, with the big big real reason that I am simply lazy. My Dad can attest to that fact since I always tried to make myself scarce when there was yard work to do growing up.

I am having the weeds taken care of this weekend. On my return from the last trip to CT, I had a letter from the City of San Jose, informing me of the code violation that is called my backyard.

Next week on Tuesday, I will be meeting with a landscape company to get a quote on both design work as well as installation.

I have a few ideas about how I want the backyard. Sam and I had many discussions and it will be great to see some of our ideas come to life.

    The three key ideas are:
    - patio area that is private from the neighbors around me
    - fountain / water feature
    - plants that are fragrant, with the possiblitity of attracting hummingbirds and butterflies (I believe butterflies are attracted by flowers... another reason I need a landscape designer)
